The Back place
@ Fitch Family Medicine
How it works:
Contrary to conventional traction, the Spina System applies gentle
pressures on the disc in a proprietary, graduated manner. Conventional
traction involves simple mechanical stretch, which cannot and does not
deliver enough action at the level of the disc to intervene in the
pathophysiology of disc injury.
During early research and development testing at the Shealy Pain
Institute, this type of decompression was reported to induce changes at
the disc level. Significant distraction at different disc levels was achieved,
and the specificity of the angle capabilities of the device were noted to
play a significant role in treatment outcomes. Due to this ability of the
Spina System to target particular segments of the lumbar spine, the
clinician can address several low back pain syndromes effectively.

The Spina System device line and IDD Therapy protocols are integral
portions of a complete program, leading to relief of back pain. There are
no short cuts; pain relief comes with healing and tissue repair, which
usually takes weeks.   The first phase of treatment begins with a treatment
course targeted to the disc level identified by diagnosis.   The second
phase of treatment is directed toward the surrounding muscle groups at
the treatment site.

Follow-up Care:

The majority of patients treated will require no further intervention.
Some chronic cases, however, may find it beneficial to continue on a
preventative schedule of periodic treatments to maintain a symptom free
lifestyle. This decision is made by the practitioner on a case-by-case basis
at the end of treatment. For patients with degenerative disc, maintenance
or preventative treatments every few months should be considered.

Post-surgery Patients:

The application of IDD Therapy at some point following spinal surgery is
not contra-indicated. It has been used as a follow-up therapy for patients
that continue to complain of post-surgical back pain. This “dual
approach” seems to offer an advantage especially in those patients that
have more than one level of herniation in which only the major segment
was excised.
